God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Pure and Faultless Religion
By L. S. Su

Within the last 30 days, there were 164 Islamic attacks in 26 countries, in which 1572 people were killed and 1307 injured. This includes the most recent known incident on 1/14/2016 where five suicide bombers entered a shopping and restaurant district in Jakarta, Indonesia and killed two people and injuring twenty. Is this type of religious practice pleasing to Allah?

Unlike the the Quran where Mohammad advocated for his followers to "strike them over the necks, and smite over all their fingers and toes" of those who disbelieve (Quran 8:12), Jesus Christ advocates something very different and far more challenging to do. Christ asks his followers to do something that goes against human nature.

"But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" -Matthew 5:44

So we see here that religious practices manifests itself in action. Is blowing yourself up and harming others pleasing to Allah? What religious practice is pleasing to God? Can you give me an example of a religious practice that is pleasing to God? The Christian worldview tells us what specific religious practice is considered pure and faultless to God.

James, most likely the brother of Jesus and the leader of the Jerusalem council (Acts 15; Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3) was one of the first Christian leaders. I'm defining a Christian as one that is a follower of Jesus Christ. Shortly after Jesus' death and resurrection, James teaches us what religious practice is pleasing to God.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. -James 1:27

The first part of the passage "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress" is easy to understand; but difficult to do. I would dare say that most Christians do not follow these instructions.

Back when James wrote this, orphans and widows had the least amount of say and influence in society and often represented a financial and social burden to society. And yet James tells us that pure and faultless religion is to help those people who have the most difficulty in getting ahead in our society. Go help someone that is unlikely going to be able to help you back? How is that profitable? But the Christian should be thankful that God didn't have this type of attitude when he sent his Son to the largest orphanage known to mankind.

What I think is really cool about this definition of religion is that anyone can practice this (no matter what your worldview is or even if you don't have one); and God will find the practice "pure and faultless".

"Around the world, there are an overwhelming 143 million+ orphan children either in orphanages, foster care or roaming the streets. To give some perspective to the enormity of this number and crisis, this is greater than the entire population of Russia. Amazingly, using 2011 statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) if “orphan” were classified as a “leading cause of death” or “disease” it would be greater than all other classified “leading causes of death” and “diseases” combined.

It is a staggering crisis that too few people even realize exists. Perhaps the saddest thing about this epidemic is that it doesn't’t need years of research to find a cure – it ALREADY has a cure – called adoption! All that is required is for families to open their doors.

Most of these children have never had loving parents to just tuck them in at night, share a game of catch, go on a family vacation or even receive a warm embrace. Most importantly these children never realize the feeling of belonging and self worth that comes with being part of a nurturing family. Unfortunately, many of the children are older than six years old, and with each passing year, they are less likely to be adopted. Thus, they will eventually “age out” of the system, never experiencing the life changing, love that a family provides. The sad facts are that most of the children that “age out” will struggle to survive with no support network, many turning to lives of drugs, violence and crime."

Worldbank.org reports that 29.5% of the population in Ukraine lives below the poverty line. After these orphans "age out" the State gives them a very small sum of money and they are on their own. With no family support, little education, and the inability for most to get a good paying job, many are forced into a life of prostitution, drugs and crime. Many of these orphans will die an early death.

Several years ago, my sister and brother-in-law got involved with this organization called Project One Forty Three, Inc., (Project 143) is named for those that it serves — namely the 143 million orphans worldwide. You need to realize that most orphans have never taken part in a vacation, shared in a game of catch with dad or gotten “made-up” with mom, much less experienced the life giving love of being connected to a family.

Project 143 encourages families to open their doors by simply taking in an orphan for a few weeks. My sister and brother-in-law did just that and hosted a Ukrainian child for a few weeks in their home during the Summer. It's almost the same thing that happens when people host a foreign student. They come live with you for a short time and then depart; and hopefully both parties gain something positive out of that experience.

My sister after hosting the same orphan on two separate occasion, she and her husband decided to adopt her. My sister and brother-in-law already has 3 kids and has opened their home to a dog, chickens, cats, hamsters, and two pet rats. My sister is often disorganized and definitely has a time management issue.

I remember while in my sister's kitchen asking her, "Why are you doing this? You don't find your life packed with enough stuff to do?"

"I..........just want to save one child from a horrible life," she replied. "I know I can do that."

The adoption process required both my sister and brother-in-law to fly to Ukraine on two separate trips and actually live there for awhile; because of the slow legal process. So my brother-in-law gave up all his vacation time in order to make this happen. The orphanage is several hours drive from the nearest airport too. So transportation was a bit of an issue too. It was like landing in JFK and after getting into the taxi and being asked, "where to?' you tell the driver, "Niagara Falls".

What made this adoption process unusual is that my sister and brother-in-law was adopting a teenager. Most adoptions occur where the child is under the age of 7. One of the process of adopting a child from Ukraine is that you need the stamp of approval from the director that is in charge of that region's orphanages. You also need to remember that the communist government for several decades has been pounding into their citizens that there is no God. Religion is an opiate for the masses. So things are only done for a purpose. And usually for some type of self serving purpose. .

So the question that the Ukrainian regional adoption coordinator kept asking in different ways was, "What is your purpose in doing all this?" or "What do you have to gain?" or "How do you benefit?"

The answer that it's because we love this child was simply NOT sufficient for the coordinator. Then the question turned to "Why do you love this orphan?" She wanted to know why and for what purpose my sister and brother-in-law was doing this.

My sister explains that their religion that my sister and husband follows instructs them "to look after orphans and widows in need".

My sister quotes James 1:27. There was dead silence after that sentence as the adoption coordinator tried to get her head around this answer.

It was definitely a tense few seconds, but was broken up by brother-in-laws' interjection, "and..... we couldn't find any widows."

So I am happy to report that I have a new niece who is adjusting well, learning our language quickly, and a valued family member. One down, a few million more to go.
