1930
Packard Brewster
This
is a Convertible Sedan (style 7815) on a Model 745-C chassis.
It has a Brewster body (number 103399), and a vehicle number of
180837. The original cost was $7,005. Park Avenue Packard in New
York City originally delivered the car to the first owner on June
16, 1930. Although the name of the original owner is not known,
he lived in Connecticut and traveled to New York City.
The car
is one of two Brewster custom-bodied Packards known. The second
Brewster was parked beside it in the Magnum Opus at Warren, Ohio
in 1999. Perhaps that was the first and only time the two cars
will be seen together.
The car
was purchased by Bill Vaccaro in 1969 for $6,300. He began restoring
the car soon after and completed the restoration in the late 70's.
Due to the quality of this restoration and excellent maintenance,
the car continues to be an award winner twenty years later.
Brewster
designed five attractive new bodies for the Packard chassis in
1930. These custom bodies were ordered in lots of five at a time,
and it is felt that there were approximately 25 produced. The
declining market for expensive cars forced Brewster into receivership
in 1931. This represented the end of the Brewster's tradition
of being the oldest, and possibly the best, carriage builder in
the United States. Brewster had started building carriages in
1810 and built their first motor car body in 1905.
