Rolls-Royce Limited was created on May 4, 1904 in Manchester, between Henry Royce, a successful engineer and Charles Rolls, The owner of the first car dealership in England. The Rolls Royce Silver Shadow was introduced in 1965, a modern compact owner-driver motor car without the presence of the Silver Cloud.
With the introduction of the Silver Shadow, The Rolls Royce image changed. No longer was it a rather rare chauffeur driver limousine, but a very superior owner-driven saloon car of which many were to be seen on the road.
The new model was chassisless with a stressed steel monocoque body and specialist coachbuilders were discouraged. Mulliner Park Ward, the Rolls Royce owned company used the Shadow floor plan and running gear to produce drophead cabrio and two-door coupé version from 1966 to 1971, with 607 two-door coupe produced. Both the two-door versions were renamed Corniche in 1971. The Silver Shadow Mulliner Park Ward two-door coupé was the car used in the much acclaimed movie of "The Thomas Crown Affair" released in 1968.
